The 2024 NephJC Kidneys Award Winners

We’re back baby! #KidneyWk 2024 in San Diego, at the #NephJC Party, we announced the winners of the 2024 NephJC Kidneys.

“The greatest award is the appreciation of the people.” -Gopi Sundar

The first four awards are voted on by the entire #NephTwitter community

The number of quality papers in the nephrology space continues to astound, but there can be only one “best”. The breakthrough paper in the NEJM on Semaglutide in CKD patients with type 2 diabetes was a clear fan favorite. This choice matches up nicely with our #NephMadness 2024 winner, Gila Monster, the mother of GLP1 antagonists. A veritable powerhouse of authors (and friends of NephJC): Vlado Perkovic, Katherine Tuttle, Peter Rossing…let the good times FLOW!

We love to promote new and ambitious social media projects in social media and we dedicate this award to the person who started this whole movement, Nathan Hellman.

2024 Nathan Hellman Social Media Award goes to Edgar Lerma and the ASN VA journals team!

Visual abstracts changed the way we share and discuss manuscripts in the short-attention-span era of social media. CJASN and NephJC are the pioneers for this media.

2024 Visual Abstract of the Year goes to Corina Teodosiu

Social Justice and social media go together like CKD and SGLT2i/ARB/GLP1/nsMRAs. Since 2020 NephJC has had a Social Justice Award. In a world full of insane changes, we need a little more justice.

The 2024 Social Justice Award goes to The International Society of Nephrology for the Kidney Petition for WHO Global Health resolution

The second series of awards are voted on by the NephJC Working group.

NephJC is a volunteer organization and is dependant on people donating their time and energy to making this work. The MVP goes to the person who best exemplifies this ethos. NephJC only gets better and better because of this persons unyielding efforts to get the job done.

The 2024 NephJC MVP goes to (the unsleepable) Cristina Popa

NephJC depends on a constant supply of new people to help run the program. Many of these people do great work but we recognize one that is the greatest. With contributions to POD 2 leadership and an initiative to post Spanish language VAs…

The 2024 Rookie of the Year goes to Milagros Flores

NephJC asks scientists to participate in the chats and podcasts and really depends on them to provide a lot of the content that makes NephJC work. The work group votes on the best of these participants. This year’s winner is not only a friend of NephJC, but an amazing inspiration (personally and professionally) to so many in Nephrology and WIN. I’m still waiting with my copy of NEJM to get it autographed, maybe next #KidneyWk?

The 2024 Engaged Scientist of the Year goes to Michelle Rheault

And one award is decided on by the NephJC board. This is Matt Sparks, Anna Burgner, Michelle Rheault, Swapnil Hiremath, Joel Topf, Brian Rifkin and Cristina Popa. This award is for person who is essential for making the whole enterprise of NephJC move forward.

The 2024 NephJC Founders Award goes to Joshua Waitzman

That’s it for the 2024 NephJC kidneys! In the end it is not about awards, but rather about the work, education, friendships and inspiration you spread as part of the NephJC community that really matters. Keep producing the #FOAMed and hopefully inspire the next generation of budding nephrons. Congratulations to all the winners! -BR

“I don’t deserve this award, but I have arthritis, and I don’t deserve that either.” -Jack Benny
